Lakeshore Chorale and Youth Chorale concert at St. Peter Claver Dec. 19

The Lakeshore Chorale and Lakeshore Youth Chorale will be heralding in the Christmas holiday with a concert at St. Peter Claver Church in Sheboygan at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19. The adult choir, directed by Paul Thompson, will present Part I of Handel’s Messiah, and the youth choirs, directed by Heather Hammond and accompanied by Drea Wagner, will open the concert with several seasonal songs.

Messiah is certainly one of the most famous of George Frederic Handel’s compositions. As an oratorio, it has all of the drama and beauty of opera but without costumes and sets, and it employs a biblical text.

The chorale will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra, managed by Molly Lieberman, and will also feature soloists both from the chorale as well as guest soloists. Soprano soloists will include Penny Kindraka, Sandy Fyffe and Linda Ruona. Christina Gilliland and Mary Klein will perform the alto solos. John Becker and Bryan Elsesser, both currently living in Milwaukee, will sing the tenor and baritone arias, respectively.

The three ensembles making up the Lakeshore Youth Chorale will complete the afternoon’s program with familiar carols as well as lesser-known choral compositions.

The Lakeshore Youth Chorale will host a reception of cookies and punch in the basement of the church following the concert.
