Plymouth Schools back online after ‘cybersecurity incident’ – investigation continuesFree Access

Computers, WiFi, the Skyward student information system and the district website were back up and running in Plymouth Schools by this Monday, after a cybersecurity incident detected over the weekend of January 13-14 caused disruption to normal online access for a week.

“Though not a surprise, we saw once again how our amazing and creative staff perseveres to keep students learning,” administrators noted in a written response to the Review’s inquiries. The district’s technical team has also been widely praised for its response to the crisis.

Administrators also noted that “the investigation is still ongoing, so the causes and results of the incident are not yet known.” Updated cybersecurity software has reportedly been installed.

The district has as yet offered little or no information as to whether sensitive information has been compromised, but they offered assurances that student safety was not impaired.

“We continue to follow the advice of our legal and forensic consultants with regard to both internal and external messaging,” the district’s statement said.

Administrators added that “we do not store any credit card information or student social security numbers in our systems” and “all of our systems appear to be working well, though we may need to do some fine-tuning.”

In response to questions about whether the district’s student information system is hosted internally or externally, administrators stated that “in the interest of security, we can’t share publicly how we store information.”

“Once the forensic investigation is complete, we should have a better understanding of any improvements we can make,” the statement concluded.
