Tigers’ defense devours Kohler

KOHLER – Howards Grove’s pressing, trapping defense overwhelmed Kohler to key a 57-36 Central Lakeshore Conference boys basketball victory here Thursday night.

The Tigers forced 18 turnovers by the Blue Bombers in the first half – many of which led to points as Howards mounted a 30-11 halftime lead.

“I was pleased with the pressure we were able to put on the ball, defensively, and I thought that allowed us to play the game at a tempo which favored us,” said Tiger head coach Mark Christenson.

“Kohler was at a disadvantage playing without their point guard and leading scorer Nick Tessmer who was out with a sprained ankle.”

The Tigers hiked their CLC mark to 10-6 (11-9 overall). Kohler fell to 3-13 in the league (5-15 overall).

Senior forward Josh Horness led the Tigers in scoring with 18 points and junior guard Mike Davis added 15. Davis was 6-for-8 from the field for an impressive 75 percent.

Davis had a team-high six steals and Paul Elzinga contributed four. The Tigers made an outstanding 22 steals and converted many of them into transition baskets.

Ashton Holzman paced Howards in assists with five.

Senior guard Christian Ertel led the Blue Bombers’ offense with 15 points.
