Super Coach

by Greg Ceilley of The Review staff

PLYMOUTH – Sam Schroeder, head coach for the Plymouth boys and girls soccer teams last year, resigned last week from those positions in order to become the new head women’s soccer coach at Ripon College.

In his first season as the PHS boys coach last fall, Schroeder guided the Panthers to the Division 2 state tournament, the Eastern Wisconsin Conference championship and a school-record 25 win (25-2-1 overall record and 14-0 in the EWC).

Schroeder took over the PHS girls coaching job last spring and directed the Panthers to a second-place finish in the EWC at 11-2-1 and a 14-7-4 overall mark.

“It is with mixed emotions that I announce my resignation, effective immediately,” Schroeder said.

“My time with Plymouth soccer has been wonderful but the realities of adult life have left me with no alternative but to continue to pursue my career as a college coach after trying unsuccessfully to find fulltime employment as a teacher in the district/area.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I leave behind an exceptional group of young men and young women.

They are of the highest quality and I will miss them but I know that they will continue to find success through their steadfast willingness to work and their passion for the game,” said Schroeder.

Schroeder expressed his gratitude to PHS athletic director Mike Slagle for giving him the opportunity to work with the sudent-athletes and for giving him the administrative support necessary to run the soccer programs at a high level.

“During my brief tenure as head coach I have benefited immensely from the support and friendship of many of you, especially David Klecka, Carrie Rooker, Wendy Koenig, Gina Chandler and Ken Schulz,” Schroeder said.

“It takes a lot of effort to successfully operate the soccer programs and I couldn't have done it by myself. Thank-you.

“In the interim, I will continue to work on behalf of the players and program until a new coach can be found.

“It is difficult to express exactly how I feel except to say that I've loved my time here,” Schroeder added.
