Cheer on EL chefs as they compete for “Top Chef” honors March 13

The celebrated chefs featured at Elkhart Lake’s fine restaurants will compete for top honors when they face off at the second annual TOP CHEF Elkhart Lake cook-off Sunday, March 13, at the Osthoff Resort, 101 Osthoff Ave.

Organizers report that advance tickets are selling swiftly for the event, which will be held from 3-7 p.m. in the Palm Garden Ballroom at the resort. The centerpiece of the event is a live cooking competition among the chefs. Guests will be treated to an unlimited tasting of gourmet foods, fine wines and craft beers.

It’s true that during the summer, competition in Elkhart Lake is centered at the Road America racetrack. But during the off-season, the competition shifts to the resort community’s unrivaled roster of restaurants – something regular visitors long have known.

Cook-off participants will include chefs from seven Elkhart Lake restaurants: Brown Baer, Elkhart Inn, Lake Street Cafe, Osthoff Resort, Paddock Club, Quit Qui Oc Golf Club and Restaurant, and Victorian Village. Guests will have an opportunity to cast votes, and in so doing, help a panel of food experts choose the “Top Chef.”

As part of the competition, chefs are given a specified collection of ingredients and a main protein chosen through a drawing; from this, they must produce a main entree. They’ll face off before the guest audience and the expert panel, as step after step, they prepare their entrees.

The event is a restaurant-led fundraising event for the Midwest Council for Children with Disabilities, a registered not-for-profit charity and IRS 501(c)(3) organization that assists special needs children in Sheboygan County with therapy, medical treatment, equipment, and supplies that are unaffordable and not covered by health insurance.

More than $50,000 was raised for MCCD at the first-ever TOP CHEF Elkhart Lake, held last year. In the months since the event, 14 children with special needs have received support through MCCD.

At this year’s event, guests will have an opportunity to bid to upgrade to a favorite chef’s table, where they will get an especially up-close perspective of their favorite chef in action.

In addition, TOP CHEF Elkhart Lake will feature both a live and silent auction. Among a wide-ranging auction selection will be food-themed items, including dinners at some of the featured restaurants, gourmet cookware, fine wines and chef-prepared dinners put together in the winning bidder’s home. The event also will include live musical entertainment.

TOP CHEF Elkhart Lake sponsors include the Osthoff Resort, Sargento, Community Bank & Trust and Torke Coffee. Event organizers continue to welcome additional sponsors.
