Bald is beautiful

A St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser to benefit childhood cancer research took place Saturday, March 19, at Falls Firehouse Pizza. Mary Ellen Schmidley of Sheboygan Falls, who was diagnosed with uterine cancer last December, organized the event, which featured local men and women volunteering to shave their heads in exchange for donations to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation in support of childhood cancer research. Shavees included Kristin Robinson (right photo), who was shaved by hairstylist Sandy Bender. Also pictured are top photo (left to right) shavee Jennifer Klemme and hairstylist Raelynn Wentz, shavee Christopher Klemme and hairstylists Mary Eder and Sandy Bender, shavee James Eder and hairstylist Terri Ninneman. Event organizer Mary Ellen Schmidley (bottom photo), owner of Falls Salon and Spa also received a head-shaving treatment from Sandy Bender, Terri Ninneman and Mary Eder. “I had heard of St. Baldricks’s from my nephew, who had his head shaved two years ago,” Schmidley said. “It got me to thinking about doing it and what a fun event it would be for Falls Salon and Spa to host. Then when I had waged a successfully short war with uterine cancer last December, I decided to do it. There are so many great stories. Kristin Robinson has been doing this for over four years in support of her mom going through chemotherapy. I have to thank Dorothy Schueffner for letting us do this at Firehouse Pizza and all the hairstylists, shavees and supporters for making it a success. Next years event will be on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, so I am looking forward to doing it again with an emphasis on local children that are battling cancer.
