Falcons capture fifth straight regional title

by Steve Ottman

The 1-2 punch of seniors Abby Debbink and Cassie Quirt proved to be the right combination as the No. 1 seeded Sheboygan Falls Falcons knocked off the No. 4 seeded Winneconne Wolves 3-0 to win their program-record fifth straight regional title in a WIAA Division 2 Girls Soccer Regional Final playoff game Saturday, June 4, in Sheboygan Falls.

Falls, which is 17-6-1 overall, will face No. 2 seeded Plymouth (15-8-2 overall) at home in a WIAA Division 2 Sectional Semifinal playoff game Thursday, June 9, at 4:30 p.m. The winner plays either Seymour or Green Bay Notre Dame at Plymouth at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 11.

Plymouth shutout Kiel 3-0 to advance to the second regional game. Winneconne finished its season at 7- 7-1.

Quirt scored two goals to lead the Falcons to their 14th shutout of the season, but it was the return of Debbink that gave a big boost to the offensive attack.

Quirt led the game off with a header goal four minutes into the first half to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Chelsea Powers had an assist on the goal.

Debbink, who was making her first start after missing the last few games with a injury, scored at the 49:52 minute of the second half to make the score 2-0 on an assist from Quirt.

Debbink returned the favor later in the half, when she assisted Quirt on the last score of the game.

“We always know where each other are,” said Quirt. “We’ve played together for three years.”

“It’s great to get back and contribute,” said Debbink. “We’re playing well as a team now.”

“Our defense put up another great effort,” said Falcons coach Brian Mentink. “Our freshman, Hailey Tomlinson and Erin Beeck, have been great under pressure. Lilly Rotter played great in goal for us. In the second half, we took control of the game.”

Falls routed the Ripon Tigers 10-0 in a first round WIAA Division 2 Regional playoff game on Thursday, June 2.

Quirt and Cassie Hammen scored two goals apiece, as the Falcons scored seven goals in the first half alone. Other Falcons to score were Powers, Katie DePagter, MacKenzie Schnell, Debbink, Allison Bassenuer and Erica Duda.

Andrea Rusch and Quirt had two assists, while Tiffany Fischer, DePagter, Allie Giese and Bassenuer each made one.

Ripon finished its season at 2-15 overall.
