Tigers fall in sectional semifinals

by Greg Ceilley

NEW HOLSTEIN – Howards Grove dug itself an early hole and it was an uphill struggle the rest of the game as Laconia defeated the Tigers, 8-1, in a Division 3 sectional softball semifinal game here Tuesday evening.

The Spartans, 17-6, advance to the sectional finals Friday against host Horicon with a state berth on the line. The Tigers finished the season 18-7.

Laconia jumped out to 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, keyed by Holly Schneider’s two-run single. The other run scored on a throwing error by the catcher who tried to pick off a runner at third base. Two of the runners who scored in the frame got aboard by walks.

The Spartans broke the game open with four runs in the third which gave them a 7-0 cushion. The first run scored on a wild pitch. Stephanie Stahmann lined a double into the gap in right-center and scored on Katelyn Dins’ single to make it 5-0.

Nikki Guell followed with an RBI double and later scored from third when Brittany Scheberl purposely got into a rundown between first and second after walking with Scheberl eventually being safe.

The Tigers avoided a shutout with a run in the seventh. Amber Reinemann drew a two-out walk, stole second and came home on Ashley Rose’s base hit.

Rose cracked a two-out single in the third for the Tigers’ other hit.

“Laconia got off to a great start in the first inning as Howards Grove showed its inexperience – arriving at the sectionals for the first time in school history,” said Tiger head coach Tom Heier.

“We played anxious and nervous in the first – giving up three runs to Laconia.”

Tiger ace hurler Lexi DeRuyter struggled with her control and Laconia took advantage. DeRuyter walked nine and uncorked several wild pitches. The junior fanned six batters and gave up eight hits in going the distance.

Guell pitched outstanding with a two-hitter and 12 strikeouts en route to the victory. Keyed by a blazing fastball and excellent location, Guell stymied the Tigers’ potent attack. The sophomore walked six.

Mariah Merchant sparked the Spartans’ offense with a 3-for-3 effort. Stahmann contributed two hits and Schneider had a team-high two RBIs.

Howards put runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and sixth but failed to capitalize.

“This was a disappointing loss for the Lady Tigers who won a [Central Lakeshore] conference championship and advanced to the sectionals. We will be looking to improve on that success next year,” Heier said.
