Panthers eke out EWC victory

TWO RIVERS – Aggressive baserunning sparked the Plymouth Panthers past Two Rivers, 5-4, in an Eastern Wisconsin Conference baseball game here Monday evening.

The Panthers raised their EWC record to 2-1 (3-3 overall).

PHS stole five bases in five attempts, led by Eric Nygaard who swiped two bases.

“We put pressure on their defense [with baserunning and executing bunts]. We advanced runners and made their defense make plays,” said Panther head coach Butch Cain.

Sophomore Erin Leinen started on the mound for PHS and pitched four scoreless innings. Trevor Thiel threw the final 2-1/3 innings – allowing one unearned run – to pick up the win. Cain thought Leinen kept the ball down well.

Leinen allowed six hits and two walks while striking out three. Thiel surrendered no hits and one walk to go with three whiffs.

The Panthers scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. Leinen led off with a walk and stole second.

Matt Gannon followed with a sacrifice bunt and when the pitcher made a throwing error after fielding the ball, Leinen scored and Gannon advanced to third base. A wild pitch plated Gannon.

Alex Nebel was the losing hurler despite a 12-strikeout performance. Nebel allowed five runs (two earned) on four hits with four walks and one hit batter in five innings.

Six Panthers had one hit each. Jake Klemme and Matt Rhude contributed one RBI each.

Andrew Nebel led the Purple Raiders’ bats with a two-run homer.
