Heart Walk scheduled in Falls

The American Heart Association is holding the annual Sheboygan County Heart Walk Saturday, Oct. 1, at River Park in Sheboygan Falls. The Heart Walk is designed to promote physical activity and heart-healthy living in an environment that’s fun for the whole family. It’s also the premiere fund raising event for the American Heart Association, raising money to save lives and fight the country’s number 1 and 3 killers — heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association is thrilled to already have 23 teams committed to the cause. Walkers can sign up at www.sheboygancountyheartwalk.org. In addition to the walk, the day will feature kids’ activities as well as free food and drink. There will also be health screenings, a place for survivors to share their stories and a touching tribute area for those who have lost a loved one to heart disease or stroke. As always, there are no entry fees for the event.

Basketball legend and Sheboygan native Rick Majerus made a donation to this year’s walk in honor of his father who died of a heart attack at 63. This year’s event is sponsored locally by a generous donation from St. Nicholas Hospital and Prevea Health. Other local sponsors include Curt G. Joa, Inc. and Sunny Ridge Health and Rehabilitation.

About 80 percent of heart disease and stroke is preventable by making healthy choices — eating right and moving more. Physical activity, especially walking, is one of the easiest ways to start becoming healthier.

Just 30 minutes of brisk walking per day can have positive effects on your blood pressure, cholesterol, waistline and even life expectancy.
