Arts Center Family Festival celebrates Colombian culture Nov. 12

Experience the exhilarating culture of Colombia without the expense of airline tickets or eight hours in a cramped seat. Family Festival: Colombia brings the traditions, folklore and foods of this dynamic South American country to the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12.

The festival includes hands-on activities and performances for all ages. Tierra Colombiana Dance Company will perform authentic folk dances in colorful costumes. Art-making workshops will include hammering metal embossments and knotting Colombian friendship bracelets. There will also be an opportunity to try making molas, the colorful reverse appliqué panels created by indigenous Kuna women.

Storytellers will share Colombian folk tales, and festivalgoers can gather over coffee in the special Colombian café to speak Spanish with family and friends. To engage the taste buds in this adventure, sample traditional foods such as sancocho (vegetable soup), arroz con pollo (chicken and rice) and obleas (traditional dessert).

“Come when you can, and stay as long as you like,” said Arts Center Performing Arts Manager Ann Brusky. “Most Family Festival performances and activities are repeated at least twice so families can work around naptimes and other events without missing any of the fun.”

Ticket prices include sales tax. There is a nominal extra charge for the traditional foods. For more information, call (920) 458-6144 or visit The Arts Center is located at 608 New York Ave. in downtown Sheboygan.

Family Festivals are supported in part by a grant from the Alliant Energy Foundation.
