Falls music students perform in state honors ensembles

Three students from the Sheboygan Falls School District recently performed as part of the Wisconsin Music Educators Association State Music Conference in Madison.

Sheboygan Falls was represented in two of the eight Wisconsin School Music Association’s (WSMA) State Honors ensembles. Over 1,600 students applied for the High School State Honors Music Project, which is in its 44th year of existence. A total of 429 students were selected for five ensembles, including the treble choir, mixed choir, band, orchestra and jazz ensemble. Sheboygan Falls High School seniors Jon Schad (alto saxophone) and Michelle Schleevogt (trumpet) performed as part of the WSMA High School State Honors Band at the Madison Overture Center Thursday, Oct. 27.
The band was under the direction of Robert and Judy Charles Endowed Professor of Music Allan McMurray, chair of the conducting faculty and director of bands at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Schad and Schleevogt are currently members of the SFHS Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble. It was Schleevogt’s second year of participation in the WSMA State Honors Project.

Nearly 1,250 students applied for the 17th annual Middle Level State Honors Music Project. A total of 309 students were selected for three ensembles including the choir, band and orchestra. SFHS freshman trumpet player Michael Winkler performed as part of the WSMA Middle Level State Honors Band Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Marriott Madison West. The band was under the direction of Dennis Glocke, the director of concert bands at the Penn State School of Music. Winkler is currently a member of the SFHS Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble. It was Winkler’s second year of participation in the WSMA State Honors Project. Wisconsin Public Radio will broadcast the WSMA High School State Honors Orchestra Band, Treble Choir and Mixed Choir performances.
