Summer road projects listed

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation regional office in Green Bay is providing a tentative listing of construction projects scheduled in the region for 2012.
The list includes state projects on interstates, the United States highway system, and the Wisconsin state highway system. Construction costs for these projects are estimated at approximately $339 million.
In Sheboygan County, there will be work on Interstate 43 from the south county line to State 42 from late February or early March to late August, a total of 18.7 miles.
The State 32 bridge deck over I-43 will be reconstructed, and the southbound I-43 bridges over County O and County J will be entirely reconstructed. The temporary I-43 median crossovers used to stage traffic for the I-43 bridge reconstruction over County O and County J will be removed.
During the construction of the State 32 bridge over I-43, I-43 northbound traffic trying to access State 32 will be rerouted using I-43 to County AA to State 32. The State 32 bridge work is expected last approximately 2 months. The State 32 ramps will be closed for approximately three consecutive nights while the pavement is resurfaced.
During the construction of the I-43 southbound bridges over County O and County J, both northbound and southbound I-43 traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on the existing northbound roadway (counter-directional traffic), and the I-43 southbound on ramp at State 42 and off ramp at State 23 will be closed. I-43 southbound traffic trying to access State 23 during this time will be rerouted to State 42 to State 23.
State 42 traffic trying to access I-43 southbound during this time will be rerouted to State 23 to I-43. Except where allowed along at the I-43 bridge reconstruction, I- 43 lane closures will be prohibited during peak traffic times of weekends, holidays, and Packer games.
Also on I-43, the town of Mosel event interchange at Rowe Road project is scheduled from July to September.
This project will construct the second half of this event interchange, the northbound off ramp. The project will also resurface Rowe Road between the northbound off ramp and southbound on ramp termini. These ramps will be restricted to use for major golf events at Whistling Straits.
Northbound I-43 may be reduced to one lane of traffic for approximately one week. Rowe Road may be closed to through traffic for approximately one week. All lanes of I-43 will remain open to traffic during peak traffic times of weekends, holidays, and Packer games.
Work on State 57 from the south county line to State 32 will take place from early July to early November, a total of 25 miles.
The project includes replacing culvert pipes, reconstructing the State 57 northbound bridge over the Onion River, surface repair on the State 57 bridge over Otter Creek, replacing pavement on approaches to the State 57 bridge over the Sheboygan River, and adding slotted left turn bays and new signals to the County C intersection.
State 57 will be closed during construction and detoured in two separate stages. The first detour will be installed for the northern construction stage (north of State 23), and will redirect traffic to use State 57, State 23, State 32 and State 57. This first stage of construction is expected to begin in early July and end in mid-August.
The second detour will be installed for the southern construction stage (south of State 23), and will redirect traffic to use I-43 to State 23 to State 57. This second stage of construction is expected to begin in late August and end in early November. Local access will be maintained throughout construction.
The replacement of wingwalls on the State 23 eastbound bridge over the Sheboygan River will take place for two weeks beginning in summer or fall.
Traffic may be reduced to one lane in the eastbound direction during off-peak traffic times. All lanes of State 23 will remain open to traffic during peak traffic times of weekends and holidays.
Be advised that schedules are subject to change. Once construction has begun on a project, updates on traffic impacts and construction progress will be provided weekly by the DOT.

UW-S math coordinator wins award

University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan Developmental Math Coordinator Janette Miller has been selected to receive an Arthur M. Kaplan Award for the 2011-12 academic year.
Miller, who joined UW-Sheboygan in January 2006, is honored for her outstanding contributions in the instruction of developmental math courses at UW-Sheboygan and across the UW Colleges and for her efforts in the launch of the HAWKES program on the UW-S campus. The HAWKES program utilizes a mastery-based computerized mathematics software that allow students to complete more than one math course in a semester, thereby creating a shorter path toward the completion of core math requirements for the Associate’s degree.
The Arthur M. Kaplan Award Program was established to recognize outstanding contributions made to education by UW Colleges faculty and academic staff. It pays tribute to the positive spirit that Provost and Vice Chancellor Emeritus Arthur M. Kaplan contributed to enhance education at the UW Colleges.
As developmental math coordinator for the UW Colleges, Miller stays abreast of developmental math teaching and learning issues, assesses the success of developmental math students and completes periodic research on improving developmental math courses and programming.
