Riverview students ham it up with puppets

Seventh-graders at Riverview Middle School in Plymouth recently had a chance to demonstrate their creative abilities through puppets. Groups of students in Kelly Schroeder and Diane Rosenbeck’s language arts classes chose a children’s book and wrote a script for it, changing the storyline in any way they saw fit. Not only did they have to create speaking parts for their characters, but they also altered the story to match their group’s personality, Schroeder said. “Puppets and settings were meticulously constructed,” she added. “Students practiced many hours so that they were very expressive in portraying their character yet loud enough to hear.” The students then performed for the fifth- and sixth-grade classes. “It was neat to see all the students so motivated and engaged,” Rosenbeck said. “Even though many of the students were nervous to perform in front of others, you could tell that they felt very proud of their accomplishments when they were done.”
