Sharon S. Richardson Hospice celebrates 5 years

As it gears up to mark its fifth anniversary of serving end-of-life care needs in Sheboygan County, the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice in Sheboygan Falls is ready to celebrate the occasion in style.

The hospice's fifth anniversary benefit event is set to take place at the Duke of Devon Pub and Restaurant on the Sheboygan riverfront Saturday, June 30, from 4-10 p.m.

The benefit will feature food, music and assorted beverages, with 25-percent of the proceeds going to support the Patient Care Fund.

“We wanted to do something special and fun to celebrate our fifth anniversary,” Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice Director of Development and Communications Linda Cates said. “The Duke of Devon is a great place and has always been very supportive of the hospice. Having it located right on the Sheboygan riverfront makes the event even more special.”

The Patient Care Fund ensures that patients and families will receive care from the hospice regardless of their financial circumstances.

“One out of every four families that come to us for service requires financial assistance,” Cates said. “We raise $500,000 annually through memorials, special events and gifts to reach this need.”

The Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice, which is a local, not-for-profit organization, began serving patients in homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and hospitals in February 2007.

In September 2007, the Hospice Center opened its doors at W2850 State 28 on the far south side of Sheboygan Falls.

“Over the past five years, we have served over 1,500 families through our hospice center and our in-home service,” Cates said. “Our hospice center is the only dedicated hospice facility in the Central Lakeshore region.”

Live musical entertainment at the June 30 benefit will feature Jazz Orgy from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and Copper Box from 7:30-10 p.m. performing in outdoor tents located on the Sheboygan riverfront.

In addition, there will be raffl es on the hour and popular food items, including Miesfeld's grand champion bratwurst and the Duke of Devon's chicken tikka masala.

Event sponsors include: Lakeland Automotive, Miesfeld's Meat Market, Professional Supply Co., Associated Bank, Burkhart Heisdorf Insurance, Lakeshore Culinary Institute, North Woods Superior Chemical Corporation, Humana, Contender Fishing Charters, Blue Harbor, B93.7 and the Breeze 1420AM.

“We have a number of loyal supporters and new businesses as well that have stepped up to assist our cause,” Cates said.

To go along with the fifth anniversary celebration, the hospice has embarked on a direct mail campaign targeting all previous supporters and donors.

“This is the first time we have done a direct mail campaign,” Cates said. “We thought it would be a good way to connect with our past donors and express to them what our current needs are at the hospice.

In addition, all donations made to the Patient Care Fund via mail, the hospice website or at the Duke of Devon during the month of June will be entered into a drawing for three special prize packages.

Those that donate $195 and above will be entered into a drawing to win a Milwaukee Brewers suite for four with a parking pass, food and beverages courtesy of Professional Supply Co.

Those donating $95 or more will be entered into a drawing to win a three-hour fishing experience for four courtesy of Contender Fishing Charters and dinner at the Duke Devon.

A donation of $50 or more will get a chance to enter a drawing for a Blue Harbor family water park package for two adults and four children with one overnight stay and breakfast.

The prize drawings will be held at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice Center on Tuesday, July 10.

According to Duke of Devon co-owner Whitney Viglietti, the hospice is dear to her family's heart.

“We have always been highly committed to the hospice cause,” Viglietti said. “We had a very personal experience with the hospice, which was very positive. We are invested in the success of the hospice for the benefit of the entire community. We hope this will be the type of fundraiser that everyone will respond to.”

“This event is about celebrating the generosity of the community,” Cates said. “It is also a great time to come together to celebrate.”

The Duke of Devon is located at 739 Riverfront Drive on the Sheboygan Riverfront.
