Panthers earn sweep at TR

TWO RIVERS – Junior Ryan Schieble of Plymouth threw a two-hitter en route to a 2-1 win in the opener of Tuesday’s Eastern Wisconsin Conference baseball twinbill with host Two Rivers.

The Panthers gained a sweep as they won the nightcap, 8-4, to improve to 7-2 in the EWC (12-3 overall). PHS has won five straight.

“Ryan did a wonderful job. He went after their hitters, made quality pitches and was around the plate,” said PHS head coach Butch Cain.

“He located the corners well, his fastball had good _ _ _ _______ movement and his curveball was sharp.”

Schieble allowed one unearned run, one walk and a hit batter to go with five strikeouts.

PHS grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a two-out RBI single by Matt Rhude. Luke Held, who had led off with a single, scored.

The Panthers made it 2-0 in the third on a throwing error by the shortstop that plated Kevin Friederichs who had walked and stolen second base.

Jake Klemme, Eric Nygaard and Rhude led PHS in hits with two each. The Panthers were 7-for-7 stealing, paced by Nygaard and Rhude with two apiece.

GAME TWO

In game two, the Panthers built an 8-0 lead after six before the Purple Raiders made a late comeback.

The key frame for PHS was the second in which it tallied three runs to go up 4-0. Clay Henning had an RBI single, Zac Cain belted an RBI double and Klemme contributed a sacrifice fly.

Eric Leinen and Cain keyed the PHS attack with two hits each. Henning, the leadoff batter, had a team-high four steals and three runs, and Cain had two steals. Plymouth was an impressive 9-for-9 stealing and was helped by 11 walks.

Leinen was the winning pitcher. He threw the first six innings and allowed no runs on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.

“Eric was on his game. He attacked the zone and moved the ball in and out. He had a good fastball and curveball,” said coach Cain.

“We did a nice job on defense except for the last inning. We were productive up and down the lineup and were patient at the plate.”
