Historic race circuits’ founders marker to be installed July 13

The Elkhart Lake Historic Race Circuits Preservation Society and National Exchange Bank and Trust have collaborated to produce a plaque honoring the community organizers of the Elkhart Lake Road Races that were held from 1950 -1952. The races were a key factor in the post-war revival of economic activity in the Village.

The marker will be installed and publicly dedicated on Friday, July 13 at 5:00 PM at the bank, 54 S. Lake Street. The dedication will precede the parade of vintage and historic rac- ing cars from Road America into the Village of Elkhart Lake at 6:00 PM.

James Johnson, who was President of the bank then known as the Bank of Elkhart Lake, was one of the persons at the forefront of planning and promoting the races. With his backing, a committee of local citizens provided direction and support. Elkhart Moraine Sand and Gravel Company’s offices were located on the second floor of the bank building, where Clif Tufte developed the original plans for Road America in 1954.
