Merlin L. Fiedler, age 88, of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., passed away peacefully early Monday morning, Feb. 11, 2013, at Sunny Ridge Nursing Home in Sheboygan surrounded by family members.

He was born Feb. 9, 1925, in the town of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., son of the late Elwood and Irma Schreiber Fiedler. He attended Monroe Grade School and Plymouth High School.

Merlin was born and raised on the family homestead of his grandfather and was honored at the State Fair for his century farm in 2004.

On May 25, 1946, he married Elaine Winkel at Louis Corners. The couple have resided on the family homestead since their marriage.

He was a well-known Sheboygan County excavator working for various excavating companies until starting his own business in 1957, Merlin Fiedler Excavating, until his retirement.

Merlin served as the town of Sheboygan Falls constable for many years, was a founding member of the Plymouth Snow Rangers, and an honorary member of the Sheboygan Falls and Johnsonville fire departments.

He also received the award “Friend of the Sheboygan County Fair” in 1989 and enjoyed playing skat, sheepshead, jigsaw puzzles, hunting and fishing, watching wrestling and watching his son race sprint car at the Plymouth Fairgrounds.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Elaine of Sheboygan Falls; five children: Gail Hovey of Waukesha, Diane Fiedler (special friend, Jack Borkenhagen) of Sheboygan Falls, Ellen (Lee) Leonhard of Sheboygan, Gene (Barb) Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls and Kenjay (Cindy) Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls; six grandchildren: Gwen (James) Orheim of Pewaukee, Carrie Hovey of Waukesha, Wendy (Andrew) Petzold of Mequon, Richard Kummer of Sheboygan, Jesse Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls and John (Ashley) Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls; five step grandchildren: Mark (Gail) Leonhard of Sheboygan, Mike Leonhard (fiancée, Chris Svec) of Malone, Jordan Adams of Plymouth, Mitchel (Lori) Adams of Fond du Lac and Lindley (Bill) Mauer of Green Bay; six great-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Thuemmler of Sheboygan; and also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant sister.

Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth. The Rev. Tom Gudmundson, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sheboygan Falls, will officiate. Cremation has taken place.

Friends may call at Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth on Friday afternoon from 3 p.m. until the time of services.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Merlin’s name or for a charity of your choice.
