Slow start hurts Resorters in defeat

ELKHART LAKE – Hilbert jumped out to a 16-6 lead after one quarter to pave the way for a 60-39 rout over the Elkhart Lake- Glenbeulah Resorters in a nonconference girls basketball game here Tuesday night.

The loss dropped the Resorters’ record to 4-16. The Wolves hiked their mark to 8-11.

Elkhart was plagued by 25 turnovers and cold shooting at 24 percent (11 of 46) from the field. The Wolves hit 46 percent (23 of 50) from the floor.

“Hilbert played real well and moved the ball. We missed shots early and that put us behind and we just could not close the gap,” said Resorter head coach Donny Kulow.

“We were behind by 10 after the first quarter and Hilbert just built on their lead from there. We just did not make good decisions at times and that hurt. Hilbert was more physical than us and played better.”

“We did have all nine players score for us on Senior Night. We were able to recognize our seniors Emily Grunewald and Mikayla Scholten and manager Emma Gross on their special night before the game,” Kulow said.

Mariah Ausloos and Rachael Flora paced Elkhart scorers with eight points each. Mikayla Scholten grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Ausloos led the Resorters in steals with three. Ashley Pfeifer was first in assists with three.

Sophomore forward Erica Gehl spearheaded a balanced Hilbert attack with 18 points.
