Tigers’ big third quarter ignites CLC win

HOWARDS GROVE – The Howards Grove Tigers roared back from a 10-point deficit in the first half to defeat visiting Sheboygan Christian, 70-61, in a Central Lakeshore Conference boys basketball matchup Friday night.

The Tigers finished in a thirdplace tie with Ozaukee in the CLC race at 11-5. Howards ended the regular season with a 15-7 overall mark while Christian finished 6-16 overall (5-15 in the CLC) heading into the playoffs.

Howards received a first-round bye in Division 4 regional play. The Tigers, seeded No. 4, will host the Manitowoc Lutheran-Mishicot first-round winner in the semifi- nals Friday at 7 p.m.

The Eagles led 19-10 after one quarter – scoring eight points off four Tiger turnovers. Christian went up 20-10 early in the second period before the Tigers got rolling. Howards outscored the Eagles 17-12 the rest of the quarter, sparked by senior guard Chris Niemann’s 10 points, to pull within 32-27 at halftime.

The Tigers dominated the third quarter, keyed by their defense, as they outscored Christian 21-5 to seize a lead. Howards turned up the defensive pressure in the period and forced 11 Eagle turnovers. The Tigers had an 11-0 run to close out the quarter, led by sophomore guard Ethan Brinkman who tallied the final seven points on free throws.

Christian, aided by four Tiger turnovers, whittled Howards’ lead down to 65-61. The Tigers went 5-for-6 at the foul line down the stretch to sew up the win. Austin Edge hit three foul shots and Brinkman, two.

Brinkman scored a game-high 27 points, keyed by an outstanding 14-for-17 (82 percent) performance at the charity stripe. Niemann and Edge chipped in with 16 and 12 points, respectively.

The teams combined for 62 free-throw attempts, with the Tigers hitting 27, compared to the

Eagles’ 18.

Sophomore guard Caleb Kelley sparked the Eagles’ attack with 25 points.

Senior guard Garrett Jahnke led Howards in assists with six and steals, four. Brinkman pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and Brevin Scholten had five.
