Nelson leads field in 2nd district primary race

PLYMOUTH - Challenger John Nelson far outpaced the rest of the field in Tuesday’s primary election in the 2nd Aldermanic District.

Nelson piled up more than 60 percent of the vote and finished ahead of incumbent Alderperson Jay Reilly and Camisha Miller in the race on the city’s northeast side.

Nelson will face off against Reilly in the April 2 general election. Reilly, with 35 votes, finished five votes ahead of Miller. Nelson got 118 votes.

There was one statewide primary race on Tuesday’s ballot, for a seat on the state Supreme Court.

Incumbent Justice Patience “Pat” Roggensack finished far ahead of two challengers - Marquette University law professor Ed Fallone and trial attorney Vince Megna of Menomonee Falls – in voting statewide and in Sheboygan County.

Roggensack, part of the conservative bloc on the state’s highest court, got 64 percent of the vote statewide and won 78 percent of the vote in Sheboygan County. Fallone finished with 30 percent statewide and 17 percent in the county, while Megna trailed far behind both Roggensack and Fallone, who will vie in the April general election.

Incumbent Sheboygan Mayor Terry Van Akkeren came out on top in a three-way race, but failed to get a majority of the vote.

Van Akkeren got 40 percent of the vote to 32 percent for county supervisor and former County Board chairman Mike Vandesteen. Alderman John Belanger finished third with 28 percent of the vote and will not advance to the April election.

Incumbent town of Wilson Chairman David Gartman finished far ahead in a four-way race for town chairman, getting 56 percent of the vote. Daniel Rostollan was a distant second with 21 percent of the vote, ahead of Timothy Rakun and Frederick Pankratz, and will be on the April ballot with Gartman.

The April election will feature city, town, village and school board races along with the Supreme Court and state Superintendent of Public Instruction.
