KMN, which includes students from Plymouth, Sheboygan and Fond du Lac, finished 12th in the 16-team boys competition. KMN didn’t have enough skiers to participate in the girls team event. Madison won the boys championship and Lakeland (Minoqua area) earned the girls title.

The state meet included a pursuit race (classic race) on Saturday and a skate race on Sunday – both about four miles in length. Kyler Berg of Ashwaubenon was the male winner with a time of 39 minutes, 33 seconds for the two races combined. Eric Bilitz was KMN’s top male finisher in 47:18.

Delaney Fitzpatrick of Lakeland was the female champion with a 44:00 clocking. Abby Busse paced KMN in 62:47.

KMN team members from Plymouth who raced included Cody Molkenthine, Eric Roberts, Alex Kleiber and Maverick Moore – all in the boys event.

“These four boys had a great two days of races. I really thought Cody Molkenthine had a great weekend of racing with personal records in both races,” said KMN coach Brian Henriksen.

KMN competed in the Greenbush Nordic Challenge Ski Race Jan. 20 at the Greenbush Trails in the Northern Kettle Moraine State Forest. The adult race was canceled that day due to a lack of snow but the high school and middle school races were held and covered about four and two miles, respectively.

Four ski teams participated – KMN, Peak (Milwaukee area), Ashwaubenon (Green Bay area) and Iola (central Wisconsin). Roberts led KMN in the high school boys race with a fifth-place finish in 23:15 and teammate Tim Scharrer was seventh in 23:27. Iola’s Sean McGibbon took first in 21:47.

KMN’s top-two finishers in the high school girls race were Abby Busse, 10th in 31:11 and Sophie Bolich, 11th in 33:06. The winner was Maria Gesior of the Peak team with a 24:21 clocking.

The middle school winners were Sam Williams of Iola in the boys race in 12:48 and Anna Zajakowski of Iola in the girls event with 13:22.

“The course was great, given the very challenging weather conditions leading up to the race,” said Henriksen.

“Our groomers Jeff Welsch and Terry Knier, along with the help of many volunteers, got the course ready and was in great condition for youth skiers.

“I thought we had a great turnout. The kids and parents had a great morning of racing,” said Henriksen.

“Our skiers represented the home course very well. All of the skiers on the team had great races and improved their ski technique and race times over the course of the season.”
