Elkhart hit six free throws down the stretch to pull off the upset win. Freshman Emma Feldmann’s two free throws gave the Resorters the lead for good, 61-60, with 2:06 remaining.

Freshman Emily Holzmann then had a steal for Elkhart and was fouled on a drive to the basket. Holzmann made both foul shots to make it 63-60. Emily Sass hit a short jumper to bring the Crusaders to within 63-62 at the 1:30 mark.

Rachael Flora and Holzmann each added a free throw to put Elkhart up 65-62 with 28 seconds left. The Resorters missed two free throws with 8.7 seconds remaining which kept Lutheran’s hopes flickering.

The Resorters, a No. 11 seed, improved to 5-17 and advance to the semifinals at No., 3-seeded Oneida Nation Friday at 7 p.m. Lutheran, a No. 6 seed which defeated Elkhart twice in Central Lakeshore Conference play this season, finished 10-13.

Feldmann, a guard-forward, drilled a three-pointer from the right corner at the first-overtime buzzer to tie the game, 58-58, and force a second overtime period.

Lutheran’s standout senior forward Ashley Scheele, who hit a game-high 21 points, fouled out in the first overtime with 2:08 left.

The Resorters outscored Lutheran 16-8 in the third period to take a 36-30 lead. Elkhart did a nice job of scoring on fast breaks and from good ball movement which led to baskets inside and from the perimeter. Sophomore Mariah Ausloos keyed the Resorter offense in the period with six points.

The game was nip-and-tuck throughout the fourth quarter. Lutheran had a chance to win it at the end of regulation but Lori Herdic missed an open shot from about 15 feet with one second left.

Elkhart took a quick 6-0 lead but Lutheran outscored the Resorters 14-5 the rest of the first quarter to go ahead 14-11.

The Resorters fell behind 19-12 with 5:00 left in the second quarter but rallied to within 22-20 at halftime, sparked by a half-court trap which forced several steals that led to points.

“What a great tournament game and tournament atmosphere. Both teams played very hard,” said Resorter head coach Donny Kulow.

“This game proves to the kids that we can win these kind of games. We probably lost 7-9 games by five or less points this season. This game gives us a big lift.

“I’m ecstatic with the girls’ effort and the way they played. I asked for 32 minutes and got 40,” Kulow said.

Flora, a freshman forward, scored a personal-best 18 points to lead a balanced Elkhart offense which had five players scoring in
