Resorters fall in regional semifinals

ONEIDA – Oneida Nation outscored the visiting Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters 18-4 in the second quarter to key a 48-25 rout in the Division 5 girls regional basketball semifinals Friday night.

The No. 3-seeded Thunderhawks advanced to sectional play with a 45-42 win over No. 2-seeded Green Bay Northeast Wisconsin Lutheran in the finals Saturday night. Oneida Nation upped its record to 21-3.

Elkhart, a No. 11 seed, ended its season with a 5-18 mark.

The big second quarter gave the Thunderhawks a commanding 25-10 halftime lead after the Resorters had trailed only 7-6 through one period.

The Resorters were hurt by cold shooting and a weak rebounding performance. Elkhart shot only 16 percent (7-for-44) from the field and was outrebounded 47-29. The Thunderhawks ripped down 22 offensive boards, compared to Elkhart’s 10.

“We were able to stay in the game for one quarter but they just pulled away as the game went on. We did not play one of our best games,” said Resorter head coach Donny Kulow.

“We were outhustled, outplayed and outcoached. We just struggled versus their 1-3-1 [zone defense].

“We have seen that defense many times and we just did not execute like we did in practice on Thursday. I would not have expected that after Tuesday’s win in two overtimes [65-62 in first round] at Sheboygan Lutheran,” Kulow said.

Junior forward-guard Lindsey Danforth of Oneida Nation hit a game-high 15 points. Mariah Ausloos paced Elkhart with six.

Ausloos grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and Emily Holzmann had five. Holzmann led in assists with two.

Ashley Pfeifer and Ausloos paced the Resorters in steals with four each. Emma Feldmann and Ausloos had a team-high two blocked shots apiece.

“I hope we learned something from this game to motivate them for next year because Oneida just took it to us,” said Kulow.

“This game, they were the better team. It’s disappointing – we had an opportunity to do something in the playoffs.”
