Slagle will receive the award at the NISCA Professional Awards Banquet March 23 in Indianapolis, Ind. A member of the NISCA receives this award only once. Honorees’ names are displayed in the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

“I’m very flattered to be put in the same category with the top people in swimming, diving and water polo in the country. It’s quite an honor,” said Slagle.

“I was very surprised and very pleased. Awards are nice but the satisfaction of working with young athletes and the relationships with the athletes mean more to me than the awards and plaques.”

Slagle is one of only 10 coaches in Wisconsin who have received the award which began being presented in 1970.

To be considered for the award, an NISCA member must have the following: served aquatics in swimming, diving and/or water polo for at least 15 years; have been an NISCA member in good standing for at least 10 years; had above average success as a competitive aquatic coach; and have shown leadership at the local (city and/or state) level or the national level in interscholastic aquatics.

Slagle has been the Panthers’ head coach for the past 34 seasons. During his tenure, the Panthers have won 24 conference championships, including the last 14 in a row in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference, and posted over 250 dual wins. He was also the Sheboygan North boys swimming head coach from 2003-2007.

He was named the Wisconsin Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association’s Division 2 Coach of the Year in 2000, 2005 and 2012. Slagle received the WISCA Outstanding Service Award in 2009.

Slagle has coached five NISCA All-Americans, and his teams have earned several NISCA Team Scholar Awards and have had NISCA Academic All-Americans.

Slagle, the PHS athletic director since 1996, has also contributed many years of service to the Plymouth Summer Swim Club.
