Nelson ignites Van Horn to first-round playoff win

PLYMOUTH – Rory Nelson pumped in 21 points to spark Van Horn Automotive to a 49-47 win over Fiedler Excavating in the first round of the Plymouth Men’s Basketball League Upper Division playoffs March 6.

Sam Scharinger chipped in with 12 points for Van Horn. Brent Krueger paced Fiedler with 12 and Evan Rathke hit 10.

In other Upper Division play, Associated Bank cruised past De O’Malley’s, 70-39. Dan Skeris sparked Associated’s attack with 21 points and Brian Simmelink added 17. Todd Neils led De O’Malley’s with 12, followed by Jim Pieper with 11.

Travis Downs poured in 22 points to power Nigh Roofing to a 69-31 rout over Fastenal in a Lower Division first-round game. Josh Cohn contributed 19 for Nigh. Fastenal’s top scorers were Paul Burgard with 12 and Surf Kastelic, nine.

In other Lower Division opening-round action, Ries Gynecology rolled past Plymouth Chiro- practic, 50-22; Masters Gallery clobbered

Antonio’s, 49-23; and Video Center defeated TM Carpentry/All-Around Services, 58-46.

Leading the Ries offense were Eric Schroedel and Dan Roche with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Chris Goebel paced Chiropractic with 10 and Ethan Feldner had four.

Tyler Platz keyed Masters Gallery’s attack with 17 points and Ryan Feldman netted 15. Kevin Falk led Antonio’s with eight and John Klemme tallied seven.

Nate Mauk scored a team-high 20 points for Video Center, followed by Brandon Schmahl with 17. Ryan Pennell led TM/All-Around with 13 and Paul Meyer had seven.

The semifinals in both divisions were scheduled for Wednesday, March 13, starting at 6:15 p.m. at Riverview Middle School’s Jim Urness Gym. The finals are set for March 20 with the Lower Division at 6:15 p.m., followed by the Upper Division at 7:15.
