NCAA Tourney follows thrilling script

SPORTS BEAT

This year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament has already proven why it’s regarded as one of the most popular, exciting sporting events in the country, and the Sweet 16 hasn’t even been played yet.

Major upsets, Cinderella stories, buzzer-beaters, amazing comebacks – all part of college basketball’s extravaganza last week. I seemingly watched the NCAA tourney nonstop from Thursday through Sunday and loved every minute of.

My tourney brackets aren’t looking so hot but there are many hoops enthusiasts in the same boat. Who would’ve in their wildest dreams have picked 15th-seeded Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers to upset No. 2-seeded Georgetown in the second round and go on to reach the Sweet 16? It marks the first time a 15th seed has made it to the Sweet 16.

My younger brother, David is in seventh heaven. He is a research associate in ecology at Florida Gulf Coast and attended graduate school at the University of Florida. The FGCU Eagles face Florida in the Sweet 16 Friday night. David has allegiance to both schools but told me he hopes the Eagles win because they are the underdogs and also because the Gators won NCAA titles in 2006 and ‘07.

Let’s check in to see how my picks are stacking up with my guest prognosticator, Donny Kulow, head girls basketball coach at Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah. Coach K’s Final Four predictions: Louisville over Ohio State, and Indiana over Kansas in the semifinals, with Louisville defeating Indiana in the finals, 75-70.

My Final Four picks include: Louisville over Kansas State, and Miami (Florida) beating Kansas in the semifinals; and Miami edging Louisville in the finals, 72-68. Kansas State (No. 4 seed) getting upset by La Salle in the second around was a back-breaker for me.

Sit back and enjoy the rest of the tournament as more thrills and excitement are in store.
