PHS Jolly Pranksters to host ComedySportz matches

The Plymouth High School Jolly Pranksters comedy team will host Milwaukee ComedySportz High School League matches on April 13 and 20.

Matches will begin at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Admission is $3 for one game, $5 for two or $7 for all three. Concessions, including Subway subs, will be available for purchase.

“These will be official games refereed by professional ComedySportz referees,” said PHS drama teacher Janet Newton, who coaches the team. “The match games will be played much more competitively in true ComedySportz fashion.”

A ComedySportz show involves two teams of players, or “act-letes,” who spontaneously create comedic scenes and skits. Each team competes to earn points that are awarded based on the audience response, and the team that is dubbed by the referee as being the funniest wins the match. Audience participation is highly encouraged and an integral part of each show.

The PHS Jolly Pranksters is the only high school comic improvisation team from Sheboygan County that participates in the ComedySportz High School League. This is the seventh year the school has competed, but the first year the team has hosted matches.

Unlike regular home shows, the match games are played with only three or four members on each team for about 45 minutes. “That means individual players will have more playing time than they do during our regular public shows,” Newton said. “And, of course, the fun competition edge will be much sharper.”

The 2012-13 team is the largest PHS has fielded, with 30 members: seniors Lala Chino, Laura Juenemann and Koua Bruce Xiong; juniors Amy Addy, Austin Ernst, Jenny Krusiec, Austin Kultgen, Jordan Lentz, Mike Loehrke, Matt Nelson, Paige Riese and Randy Zeinemann; Alayna Arnold, Jimmy Balistrerri, Shauna Clemens, Lucas Collard, Jonathan Gideon, Patrick Lemkuil and Andrea Werner; and freshmen Alex Gravatt, Courtney Groh, Kate Harms, Alex Kleiber, Julia Krueger, Kyra Kronberg, Adam laVine, Abby Nicholson, Kelly Pocian, Sierra Schulz and Stephanie Zimmerman.

The 2013 season kicked off Feb. 23. The regular season wraps up May 4 with Plymouth taking on Tosa West at noon and Rufus King at 1 p.m. at the Milwaukee ComedySportz Arena at 420 S. 1st St., Milwaukee. A tournament will follow in May.

The team also will perform free for the public at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4, and Thursday, May 30 in the PHS Amphitheatre. Soda and popcorn concessions will be sold at all shows.

The team is grateful to its local sponsors: Subway, Masters Gallery Foods, Pleasant View Realty, Arnold Mediation Services, Chiro-Health Chiropractic Care, Haucke Plumbing and Heating, and LaziBoy Carwash.
