Laning resigns as PIC head

PLYMOUTH – Martha Laning, who turned more than a decade of dreams into the reality of the Generations center as head of the Plymouth Intergenerational Coalition, is resigning.

Laning, who spearheaded the fund drive that led to the construction of the $4.66 million multigenerational center that opened in 2011, cited personal reasons in submitting her resignation to the PIC board.

“To leave all of this is the hardest thing to do,” Laning said of her departure. She cited increasing personal demands as a major reason for leaving her position.

“Things happen in life and you have to move on. I didn’t have any good choices of what to let go,” Laning added.

Laning said she felt good about the position the center is left in.

The coalition completed its capital fund-raising campaign and retired all debt on the building in January of this year.

Laning was named executive director of PIC in 2009, at a time when the long-planned center was getting ready to move ahead with fund-raising and construction.

The center - combining the senior center, Head Start, a day care facility and more in one multi-purpose building – had been in planning and discussion for a decade or more at that point, with many stops and starts.

The capital campaign launched in the fall of 2009 succeeded to the point where construction began in late 2010 and the building opened May 4, 2011, with $573,000 left to raise in the capital campaign.

Under Laning’s guidance, PIC was able to raise the remaining amount in the next 18 months.

Laning also oversaw daily operations of the center, which also included the Family Resource Center of Sheboygan County among its tenants when it opened.

“I’m really optimistic about the future of the center,” Laning stated. “We’re in a good position. Now a new person can come in, whoever it is, and take it to new levels.

“This project will be one of the highlights of my life,” Laning concluded. “It’s a wonderful feeling and it’s hard to move on.”
