Maywood park schedules wide variety of outdoor activities

Ellwood H. May Environmental Park, known to most people as “Maywood”, is part of the City of Sheboygan’s park system. Supported by the city, it is organized around an active group of volunteers, formed into a not-forprofit organization with an excellent Board of directors. Major private funding has expanded the building and services that benefit people throughout Sheboygan and neighboring counties. Maywood is located at 3615 Mueller Road, Sheboygan. Here are some of the upcoming activities and programs taking place, many which you and your family will find of interest and may want to attend.

- Kayak Destinations: On Wednesday, April 10, 7 pm, Tom Koeppen and the Lakeshore Sea Kayakers will share some of their favorite paddling destinations and review the equipment needed to prepare for those water adventures. Program is free. Questions are encouraged.

- Wolf River Sturgeon Run: Al Fairfield will discuss the spring spawning run of the lake sturgeon up the Wolf River, their biology, history, and when and where is the best place to observe these giant spawning fish. It is a free program that will take place on Sunday, April 14, 2 pm.

- Africa: On Thursday, April 18, 7 pm, Jon Keckonen, who spent two weeks in Tanzania in June of 2012, will discuss his safari on the Serengeti. He took many outstanding scenic and wildlife pictures in the Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Highlands as well as at two Maasi villages that he will share with you. Program is free.

- Woodcock Walk: American woodcock courtship flights take place in the spring and can be seen at Maywood. You can join the Sheboygan County Audubon Society members as they take you to one or two ideal locations to watch this annual event. Please meet at Maywood’s main building on Friday, April 19, 7:30 pm (come a little early). Dress for the weather. Program is free.

- Spring Astronomy Day: Join the Sheboygan Astronomical Society as they aim telescopes at Jupiter, The Pleiades (Seven Sisters), M44 (Beehive Cluster), M35 (Kermit Cluster), and more. Program is free. It will take place on Saturday, April 20, from 8 pm.to10 pm. Meet at the Maywood parking lot (lights will be turned off for this event). Cancellation - rain or cloud cover.

- Earth Day at Maywood: To commemorate Earth Day, Maywood will be showing the film “Green Fire” in tribute to Aldo Leopold, known as the father of modern day wildlife management. Program is free. The film will be shown on Monday, April 22, 7 pm.

- Birdhouse Decorating Contest: Maywood is hosting a bird house decorating contest in conjunction with the international Migratory Bird Day. It is open to all ages, no entry fee and entry forms can by obtained at the Maywood Ecology Center, by calling (920) 459-3906 or going to their website.

Prizes will be awarded to both youth and adult divisions. They include: Pre-Kindergarten, Elementary (1st to 5th grade), Middle School (6th thru 8th grade), and High School (9th thru 12th). Adult divisions include functional birdhouses, decorative birdhouses, green (recycled materials) birdhouses. Bird houses must be dropped off at Maywood April 21 to 27 during regular Ecology Center hours. For more information, please call Maywood at (920) 459-3906.

- Team Maywood: It’s a bike program geared up for every Monday evening at Maywood to train people of all skill levels. Additional to the Monday training session, participants will enjoy longer weekend rides complete with SAG services and snacks. The program is run independently by Debbie Posewitz in partnership with Maywood. This is a high quality bike training program that is not free.
