Young Resorters show potential

by Greg Ceilley of The Review staff

ELKHART LAKE — The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah girls soccer team is very young but new head coach Kevin Ruh sees much promise and potential in the Resorters.

The Resorters have only one senior and no juniors on their 15-player roster. They return seven letter winners, including three starters, from last year’s squad which finished 6-11 overall and advanced to the Division 3 regional finals.

“Even though we are a very young team, we are very optimistic about the season. We have a lot of potential and the girls are very supportive of each other,” said Ruh.

“The returning girls are working with the younger girls and talking about what they can expect and different scenarios that may occur during a game.”

Ruh said the girls are bonding well and have all played together in the past which has been evident in the practices. Their familiarity with each other is one of the team’s strengths.

The coach said the main weakness is being young and having a lot to learn.

Elkhart’s returning starters, all sophomores, include midfielders Meghan Clemens and Rebecca Graf and defender Jessa Feldmann.

Ruh expects key contributions from every player.

“Our philosophy will not be for a few players to run away with the game. Everyone needs to play within our system and play the position they are in when in that position,” he said.

Ruh replaced Richard Sadiq who was the coach the previous five years. Ruh is in his first season as a high school soccer coach but has coached boys and girls teams at age levels ranging from under-6 to U-16 over the past 14 years. He coached many of the current Resorters before they entered high school.

Asked if any varsity newcomers have impressed him, Ruh answered, “From knowing all the girls before, I was most impressed by the fact that they all came to the first practice in shape and ready to practice.”

The coach said the key to the team having success is staying healthy.

Last season, the Resorters notched their first win in regional play when they defeated North Fond du Lac, 2-1, in a Division 3 first-round match. Elkhart lost to Winnebago Lutheran Academy (Fond du Lac) in the finals, 3-0.

Elkhart lost four All-Central Lakeshore Conference players (three to graduation) off the 2012 team, including forward Maddie Landgraf who was named to the first team for the second straight season. Landgraf was one of four seniors (all starters) who graduated off last year’s squad.

Ruh pointed out his top goals for the season:

“To be better at the end of the season than the beginning, and have all the girls saying, ‘I cannot wait till next year!’”

Looking at the conference, Ruh observed, “I do not think any of the teams in the conference will ‘walk over’ teams. As in years past, Oostburg, Howard Grove and Cedar Grove-Belgium will be near the top.”

Howards is the defending CLC champion and returns two allleague players. Oostburg was a D-3 state qualifier last year. Random Lake is a new CLC soccer program this year.
