Experience boosts Tigers' hopes

HOWARDS GROVE – With experience being a major plus, the Howards Grove boys tennis team has a bright outlook for the 2013 season.

A year ago, the Tigers had no returning players from the previous season and zero seniors as they went through a lot of growing pains. This year, the Tigers return all eight of their letter winners from last season along with senior Davis Nennig who lettered in 2010 and 2011 and senior Cody Stange, a 2011 letter winner. Nennig and Stange didn’t compete last year.

“I’m very excited for the 2013 season. Last year we had an inexperienced team with many players who having never played before and this year we will have all letter winners returning,” said Tiger head coach Elizabeth Hill.

“We are a young team but the excitement and eagerness my team has is amazing.”

Hill expects Stange and junior letter winners Andrew Reinemann and Luke Stanczyk to lead the squad this season. The coach said even though the team is still very young, it should have a balanced lineup.

“I’m happy to have seniors Cody Stange and Davis Nennig back for their senior year. We also welcome new members of our team from Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah,” said the coach.

Howards Grove and Elkhart are a co-op tennis program this season. The Resorters who are on the team are senior A.J. Klemme and senior Karn Saiyudthong, a foreign-exchange student from Thailand.

Hill, in her fourth season at Howards, pointed out the keys to having success as a team this season.

“We will need to be solid top through bottom. All players will need to contribute wins in order for us to have a successful year,” she said.

Hill anticipates a tough Eastern Wisconsin Conference this season.

“I see Manitowoc Roncallli, Plymouth and Kohler fighting for the top spot,” she said.

Roncalli is the three-time defending EWC champion. PHS finished third, one point behind Two Rivers. The Tigers finished in the lower half of the conference.

Hill noted her top goals for the season: “Finish in the top half of the conference and we also want to be competitive every night.”
