The boys squad has 33 team members, including 16 returning letter winners. The girls team consists of 18 athletes, including 13 letter winners. Even though the boys squad has a lot of letter winners back, the Tigers are fairly young, with 18 underclassmen, including 11 freshmen.

“The outlook is good. We have a large team on both the boys and girls teams,” said third-year Tiger head coach Tyler Biederwolf.

Biederwolf said dedication and hard work every day are the keys for the team to have success this season.

BOYS PREVIEW

Heading the group of letter winners for the Tigers is junior distance runner Jordan Fischer and senior sprinter Donald Oneson. Fischer paced his team in last year’s Central Lakeshore Conference Meet with a second place in the 800-meter run and a third in the 1,600 race.

Fischer and Oneson were Division 2 sectional qualifiers in the 1,600 and 200 races, respectively, after Fischer placed third in his event at the regional level and Oneson was second in his. Oneson was on the Tigers’ 400 relay which finished second in the regional and advanced to the sectional. Senior letter winners Matt Lombardo and Everhett Johnson also competed in the relay.

“Our strength is once again our numbers and our weakness will be our young team. We will work hard and should show great improvement over the course of the year,” said Biederwolf.

“Our boys team will be very balanced. We will continue to grow as the year goes on.”

The coach expects his seniors to lead with their performances, motivation and dedication to the team.

Biederwolf has been impressed with how hard the new members of the boys and girls teams have worked to help the program.

The coach pointed out his top goals for boys and girls teams: “Perform to the best or our abilities and grow as a team.”

He expects a competitive boys conference. “We are, as always, looking to do well in the conference. Last year was very close and I would think it will be the same this year,” Biederwolf said.

GIRLS PREVIEW

The Tigers return their two 2012 sectional qualifiers in senior distance runner Cassie Marver and junior sprinter Emily Eschen. Marver led her team in the regional meet with third-place efforts in the 1,600 and 800 events – advancing to sectional competition in both. Eschen earned a sectional berth in the 400 race after placing fourth in at the regional level.

Marver led the Tigers in the CLC championships as she captured third in the 1,600 and 3,200. Eschen finished third in the 400 and fourth in the 800.

“Our strength will be our motivation and dedication. Our weakness will be our distribution of events and finding the right mix that fits our team,” observed Biederwolf.

He expects the seniors to lead the team in the same way as the boys.

“Our girls team will be light in areas but they are very dedicated and hard working. I am sure they will step up and help the team out wherever they can,” Biederwolf said.

“We are looking to be very competitive this year in the conference. We have really started to build our team and grow as a group.”
