Kiel won the four-team tourney with a 2-0 record. New Holstein and Reedsville also played. The event was originally scheduled with a round-robin format but each team played just two games due to unplayable field conditions in the morning caused by inclement weather.

The Tigers lost to New Holstein, 11-4, in round one and fell to Kiel in round two, 8-7. Howards outhit Kiel 14-8 and the host Huskies 13- 11 but committed three and four errors in the two games, respectively.

Howards missed a chance to pull out a win over Kiel in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Tigers scored once to pull within 8-7 and had the potential tying run at third base with only one out. The runner was left stranded.

Robyn Bitter swung the hot bat for Howards in the Kiel game with a 4-for-4 performance. She also had a team-high two RBIs. Katie Sohn, Samantha Black and Lyndsay Peterson added two hits each.

Allyson Bonde hammered a three-run homer to key a four-run fifth for the Raiders which put them up 8-5. Bonde had a teamhigh three hits and four RBIs.

Brooke Goehring was the winning pitcher. Goehring walked two and struck out eight en route to a complete game.

Sohn took the loss – allowing four earned runs on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts in seven frames.

The Huskies erupted for seven runs in the top of the fifth to fuel its victory over the Tigers.

Four errors plagued the Tigers in the contest which led to six unearned runs. Erin Diederichs drove in four runs and Morgan Becker was 3-for-3 to ignite the Huskies’ attack.

Bitter and Amber Reinemann were 4-for-4 and 3-for-3, respectively, to lead Howards. Valerie Free smacked a solo homer in the fifth.

Tristen Guelig picked up the win and Kelsey Kaiser earned a save. Guelig went four innings and walked four while striking out three. Kaiser fanned one batter and walked zero in three innings.

Sohn was the losing hurler. She gave up five earned runs on 11 hits with five walks and four whiffs in going the distance.

Tiger head coach Tom Heier commented on his team’s play in the tourney.

“We showed our youth as a team and our inexperience covering bunt situations as a unit. We were not quite aggressive fielding the ball and making a quick decision to make a play,” said Heier.

“We hit the ball well as a team but did not capitalize with people in scoring position. This was a great tournament to play to get us ready for the rest of our season.

“Katie Sohn actually pitched two pretty decent games but the experience in certain situations from the other teams really determined who won these games,” said the coach whose team is 1-2 this season.
