Summer School registration now open

Registration is now open for the Plymouth School District summer school program, which offers dozens of classes for students in kindergarten through high school.

While remedial courses are available, the vast majority are designed to keep students thinking and exploring during the summer months. Enrollment is open to all students, regardless of which district they attend during the school year.

The district will be offering 85 classes during Summer School. New classes are:

Tech Tool Evaluators: Students in grades 5 to 8 will test, evaluate and familiarize themselves with various Web 2.0 tools and iPad apps. The culmination of the class will be the creation of a wiki that provides reviews, uses and examples of projects created using the different tools and apps.

Gregor the Overlander: Students in grades 5 to 8 will follow the title character in the Underland book series through the grate in the laundry room of his New York City apartment building, where he encounters many creepy creatures.

Public Speaking: Students in grades 6 to 8 will learn many different speech types such as informative, impromptu, persuasive and demonstrative.

Art for Self and Community: Students in this class for grades 1 to 8 will design and paint an individual prototype fence picket, as well as create designs for pickets to add to a fence in front of Riverview Middle School.

Summer School will run from June 17 through July 26, with the week of July 1 off. Classes will meet weekdays between 8 and 11:45 a.m. daily at Plymouth High School, Horizon Elementary School and the green space in between.

Science Adventure Week and Project Lead the Way engineering courses will be offered the week after summer school, for a total of six weeks of educational opportunities this summer. In addition, several music courses will be offered in August.

All registration will be handled online this year. Those without access to the Internet can visit any Plymouth school during regular school hours to register. Parents are encouraged to register as soon as possible because many classes do fill up.

Current students should register through Skyward Family Access. Out-of-district and parochial families who have attended Summer School in the past should call a public school office for their login information. New enrollees will need to visit Riverview or one of the elementary schools to register.

Registration should be completed, including payment of fees, by May 3; limited registrations will be accepted until May 28. Fees may be mailed to or dropped off at Riverview Middle School, 300 Riverside Circle, Plymouth.
