Unleash the Power of Age - is not the name of a new computer game but is the theme for Older Americans Month 2013. Every year since 1963, May has been a month to appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of older adults and their contributions to our communities.

People across our nation are achieving remarkable things in later life. Many older adults are experts in their fields, have years of valuable experience, and are using that knowledge to improve the lives of others. Older Americans of today are more productive, active and influential members of society, sharing essential talents, wisdom, and life experience with their families, friends and neighbors.

Life can be good for older Americans. If you are an older American, life is what you make of it. But there can be hidden struggle to life as an older American – one being elder abuse. Elder abuse does happen; it happens in Sheboygan County; and it happens in many different, and often unseen, forms. If you think an elder may be experiencing abuse, be supportive. Ask them to contact Safe Harbor at 920-452-7640 or Sheboygan County Aging and Disability Resource Center at 920-467-4100. All calls are confidential.

Do you know or do you see an older American who just seems to have that endless drive and list of accomplishments because then you will realize that they are living by the words “Unleash the Power of Age.”
