Panthers hammer TR in EWC sweep, push win streak to four

¦ Romps throws nearperfect game in nightcap

TWO RIVERS – The Plymouth Panthers dominated a very young Two Rivers team en route to winning both ends of an Eastern Wisconsin Conference softball doubleheader here Thursday.

PHS won the opener, 18-4, behind a season-high 16 hits. In the nightcap, junior Rachel Romps fired a one-hit shutout, 10-0.

The Panthers, who have four straight, improved to 3-1 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference (5-1 overall). The Purple Raiders fell to 0-4 in the EWC (0-6 overall).

“We had solid approach to hitting again and got contributions from everyone. It was a nice sweep on the road,” said Panther head coach Gale Grahn.

“Rachel threw her best game of the year in game two. She overpowered hitters and mixed a nice change-up in.”

Romps had a perfect game until the top of the fifth inning when Mariah Broehm hit a leadoff single. Romps walked none and struck out 10 in five frames (10-run rule) as she hurled her third shutout of the season.

PHS broke game two open with an eight-run explosion in the third. Brianna Sippel ripped a tworun double which capped off the inning. Romps contributed a two-run single, and Mikaela Holdridge and Joa Cain each cracked an RBI single earlier in the third.

Romps was also strong at the plate with a team-high three hits and two RBIs. Sippel also had a pair of RBIs. Emily Marty led in runs with two.

PHS pummeled Raider pitching for nine runs in the top of the first and six in the second to build a 15-2 lead in the opener. The Panthers rapped out six hits in the opening frame, drew three walks and were aided by a Raider error.

Marty’s two-run triple sparked PHS in the first. Sara Thompson had an RBI double, and Rachel Romps and Hannah Kaiser contributed run-scoring singles.

The key hits in the PHS second were Marty’s two-run single and Thompson’s two-RBI triple.

Marty, Thompson and Holdridge wielded the hot bats for PHS in the game with three hits each. Marty had a team-best four RBIs, followed by Thompson with three and Sara Romps, two.

Georgia Wise added two hits for the Panthers. Sophia Kiela and Mckenna Nischke led in runs with three apiece.

Rachel Romps earned the win – allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits with one walk, 10 strikeouts and a hit batter in four innings.
