Romps twirls one-hit shutout

PLYMOUTH – Junior Rachel Romps of Plymouth fired a onehitter in blanking New Holstein, 5-0, in an Eastern Wisconsin Conference softball game here Tuesday evening.

The shutout was Romps’ seventh this season, plus a combined shutout with Erica Helmer in Saturday’s Sheboygan County Invitational in which she hurled six scoreless innings. ________________

The Panthers raised their second place Eastern Wisconsin Conference record to 7-2 (12-2 overall). Waupun is in first at 10-1. New Holstein dropped to 4-4 in league play (6-5 overall).

Romps, who faced only two over the minimum of 21 batters, had eight strikeouts and no walks. The only hit by the Huskies was a one-out single by Kelly Schmitz in the top of the fourth inning.

Sara Thompson and Marissa Grapentine led PHS in hits with two each. Sara Romps had a team-high two RBIs. Rachel Romps, Grapentine and Hannah Kaiser had one RBI apiece.

Cain paced the Panthers in runs with two.

“It was a good, solid win. New Holstein has been playing well of late,” said Panther head coach Gale Grahn.

“Rachel was in complete command. The defense also made some nice plays behind here. It was a total team effort.”

The losing hurler was Kelsey Kaiser who went the distance. Kaiser allowed four earned runs on nine hits with two walks and six whiffs.
