Students in Kelly Schroeder’s language arts class began by researching different forensic science fields and applying the knowledge they learned along with skills to practice forensic science techniques.

Then four crime scenes were set up around the school. Each student went to one of the scenes to gather evidence, record notes, and write a crime scene summary. Students also analyzed physical evidence and read witness statements and police reports.

Students then created suspect boards to record evidence leading to certain suspects. Based on information gained through the evidence, statements and police reports, they identified who they thought had committed the crime.

The project also included a judicial phase, where students served as prosecutors or public defenders and wrote a persuasive paper backed up with evidence.

The papers became the basis for a mock trial. Students presented their cases before a judge, including an opening statement, presentation of evidence, calling witnesses to the stand and closing statements by each side, and then a jury deliberated on the guilt of each perpetrator.
