Panthers stay hot with twinbill sweep

PLYMOUTH – The Plymouth Panthers ran their winning streak to seven as they swept an Eastern Wisconsin Conference doubleheader from Kewaskum, 3-1 and 7-5, here Tuesday.

PHS finished 12-2 in the EWC and clinched second place. The Panthers, which finished 17-2 overall in the regular season, still have a shot at earning a share of the league title if first-place Waupun loses its makeup game against Campbellsport, scheduled for Wednesday, May 15. Waupun is 12-1 in the EWC.

“This was a nice sweep of the third-place team in the EWC,” said PHS head coach Gale Grahn.

Kewaskum posted a 9-5 league record and is 13-6 overall. ___________

In the opener, the Panthers scored all of their runs in the bottom of the third inning. The key hit was Mikaela Holdridge’s two run single. Two Indian errors resulted in all three runs being unearned.

Rachel Romps earned a complete-game win – allowing one earned run on five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.

The Panthers banged out 13 hits in the nightcap, led by Holdridge who was 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Marissa Grapentine added three hits and a team-high three runs. Romps, Emily Marty and Joa Cain contributed one RBI each.

Romps earned the win. She gave up three earned runs on five hits with zero walks and six whiffs in going the route.

“We hit well in game two. Holdridge continued to swing a hot bat,” Grahn said.

“It was an excellent end to the regular season. We have won 16 of the last 17 games, and the girls have stayed focused.”

Lindsey Winkler socked three home runs for the Indians – a two-run blast and a pair of solos as she led her team in RBIs with four.
