Panther duo shares seventh at state

MADISON – Plymouth’s Steven Blend and Matt Primozic tied for seventh place in the Division 2 doubles competition at the state individual tennis tournament, held Thursday through Saturday at UW-Madison’s Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Blend, a junior, and Primozic, a freshman, advanced to the quarterfi- nals with victories in rounds one and two in straight sets. In the quarterfinal, the Panther duo lost to top-seeded and eventual champions Nick DelMorel and Mark Cullen of Green Bay Notre Dame, 2-6, 1-6.

In their next match which decided a spot in the fifth-place match, the Panthers fell to Notre Dame’s Nate Calawerts and Nick Williams, 3-6, 4-6.

The PHS team won its first-round match over Bryan Bakke and Charlie Kirsh of Edgewood Sacred Heart, 7-5, 6-1.

In round two, Blend and Primozic swept Justin Marshall and Ethan Schultz of Watertown Luther Prep, 6-2, 6-0.

“Steven and Matt played well against the No. 1-seeded team. Steve started the match with an ace and won the first game but the Notre Dame team has played together for a long time and they were consistent and accurate with their strokes,” said PHS head coach Chuck Salibi.

The state champions finished the season 24-0.

“Steven and Matt represented the Plymouth High School and community well at the state tennis tournament. They played well and hard and have gone as far as any other player from Plymouth in the state meet,” Salibi said.
