During the assembly, held May 17 in the school auditorium, school counselors Therese Unger and Robin Hoopman talked about the yearlong effort to combat bullying.

The school participated in Rachel's Challenge, a student empowering program that equips students and adults to combat bullying that was created by the family of Rachel Scott, the first student killed at Columbine High School in 1999.

Riverview also participated in a One Book, One School project in which all students and staff read the book "The Revealers" by Doug Wilhelm to explore ways to control and prevent bullying in the school. A group of 12 eighth-graders helped plan various activities throughout the month of October.

The school’s Friends of Rachel club made compliment posters and bathroom signs, wrote positive words on mirrors, put kind notes in books and helped plan the May 17 assembly.

At one point during the assembly, students were invited to stand if they participated in any of the numerous kindness activities. Eventually, nearly everyone in the auditorium was standing. Students also watched several videos about kindness and sang the Bruno Mars song “Count on Me” together.

Unger noted that, as expected, the reporting of bullying increased during the year as awareness grew. People reported their own problems, and also for friends. “We have caring people,” she said.

The next steps for the school will be to continue to follow up on bullying reports, to empower witnesses more and to continue the kindness programs, Unger said.
