Elder abuse

To the Editor:

Did you ever stop and think of elder abuse and that it happens in Sheboygan County? Probably not, because Elder Abuse is not something one wants to think about or talk about. But to an elder, who now is a victim; this becomes a life event, which maybe forever remembered.

Elder abuse happens to both men and women and isn’t always something you can see. Many victims are frail, vulnerable and suffering. Elder abuse is not limited to the poor and the forgotten. Elder abuse can be physical, emotional, sexual, financial, neglect and self neglect. Most are afraid to speck up and ask for support.

If you are a victim of elder abuse please be aware that you do not have to go through this alone. Reach out! If you think you know someone who is being abused, be supportive and talk to them. These issues cannot be kept family or neighborhood secrets. Whatever the circumstances, there is help and support available by calling Sheboygan County Aging and Disability Resource Center at (920) 467-4100; or Safe Harbor at (920) 452-7640. All calls are confidential.
