Duaine D. Barthels, age 85, of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., passed away early Friday morning, June 7, 2013, at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan where he had been a patient for the last eight days.

He was born Aug. 16, 1927 in Oshkosh, Wis., a son of the late Herman and Ethel Liddle Barthels. He attended Spore Grade School in Berlin and graduated from Berlin High School in 1945.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946-48 serving in World War II.

On Sept. 9, 1949, he married Geraldine Querveld in Eagle River, Wis.

He worked on the Great Lakes on the Oar Carriers for many years.

On April 11, 1959, he married Lorraine Schmidt in Waukegan, Ill. The couple resided in Plymouth for five years and for 49 years in the town of Sheboygan Falls.

He was a truck driver for Gilson Brothers, Great Lake Homes and retired from the Kohler Co. in 1993.

He is a member of Saron United Church of Christ in Sheboygan Falls and is a member of UAW #833 of Kohler.

Duaine enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and yard work. He was an avid reader of World War II history and a World War II history buff.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Lorraine of Sheboygan Falls; four children: Russell Barthels of Berlin, Rodney (Lenette) Barthels of Berlin, Linda A. Barthels of Sheboygan Falls and Brian (Linda S.) Barthels of Sheboygan Falls; four grandchildren: Brent Barthels of Union Grove, Wis.; Sara Barthels of Berlin, Elizabeth Barthels of Sheboygan Falls and Jacob Barthels of Sheboygan Falls; two great-grandchildren, Kya and Addison Barthels; one sister, Marlene Sauer of Omro, Wis.; one brother-in-law, Merlin (Shirley) Schmidt of Sheboygan Falls; and also survived by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was also preceded in death by one infant daughter, Rochelle; one brother, Dion “Butch” Barthels; one brother-inlaw, Dan Sauer and his mother- and father in-law, Edward and Viola Schmidt.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, at the Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth. Licensed Lay Pastor Beth Petzke of Saron United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in the Plymouth Woodlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call the Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the time of services.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Duaine’s name for the Saron United Church of Christ.

The Plymouth VFW World Cheese Center Post #5612 will conduct military rites at the cemetery following the services.
