Road work picks up pace

Drivers will be challenged to avoid roadwork in Sheboygan County starting this week, with six different projects listed by the state Department of Transportation regional office in Green Bay.

Work began this work on two new projects on State 23, at the intersection with County M in the town of Sheboygan Falls and at three intersections north of the city of Plymouth.

The contractor will start removals and grading at the State 23 intersections with County O, E and Pleasant View Road this week.

The 1.2-miles, $2 million project consists of creating safety enhancements and rehabilitating the three intersections along State 23. Left turn lanes are being constructed in the median of State 23 at each of these locations. These turn lanes will restrict the traffic that will be able to cross State 23. Traffic approaching from the north or south (attempting to cross State 23) will only be allowed to make a right hand turn onto State 23 after the project is completed.

Full closures (except for emergency vehicles) of the County O and Pleasant View intersections began Monday at 6 a.m. The outside (right) lane and outside (right) shoulder closures on State 23 east and westbound also started Monday at 6 a.m. from State 67 to State 57. State 23 closures will conclude at 12 noon Friday, June 21 and go back in effect Monday, June 24 at 6 a.m. Left hand turns through the median on State 23 at these intersections will be restricted to emergency vehicles only. Traffic should utilize County E as a temporary alternate route.

Traffic control setup will begin this week on State 23 at County M, where a j-turn intersection is to be installed. There will be no traffic impacts this week.

The rural section of State 32 from State 23 to the south village limits of Howards Grove is scheduled to be paved this week. Work will continue with the turn lane expansions at County O and State 32 and work for added turn lane expansion at Woodland Road and State 32 may begin. Work in the village of Howards Grove will continue as well at the northwest and southwest quadrants of intersections at County A and State 32 and at State 32 and State 42. Removal of curb and gutter, pavement, and sidewalk with some storm sewer work is planned.

This 6-mile, $ 2-million project involves the resurfacing of State 32. The road will be milled and resurfaced with increasing more right turn lane capacity at intersection of County O, Woodland Rd, County J, and Playbird Road. In the village of Howards Grove some drainage structures will be reconstructed or adjusted and curb and gutter sections will be replaced.

The contractor, Northeast Asphalt and its subcontractors will be doing all of the work. The work involves removals, grading, base, asphalt pavement, storm sewer, sanitary sewer manholes, erosion control, permanent signing, traffic control, pavement marking, restoration and all necessary items to complete the work.

State 32 and all side roads will be open to all traffic during construction using flagging operations suitable for lane closure. Drivers are advised to slow down in the rural section of State 32 as the road is milled and now consists of a roughened surface. The shoulders near the intersections at County O, Woodland Road, County J, and Playbird Road are closed. Bumps are marked with warning signs. Please use caution.

Work at the northwest and southwest quadrants of the intersection of State 42 and State 32 will be getting started this week. Removal of curb and gutter, pavement, and sidewalk with some storm sewer work is planned. Concrete work with new curb and gutter, driveways, sidewalk improvements will also be taking place once removals are complete.

This one-mile, $500,000 project involves the resurfacing of State 42 within the village of Howards Grove. The road will be milled and resurfaced with rehabilitation to curb and gutter and storm sewer. New sidewalk will be installed along State 42 within the village. The contractor, Northeast Asphalt and its subcontractors will be doing all of the work.

State 42 and all side roads will be open to all traffic during construction using flagging operations suitable for lane closure.

The Interstate 43 bridge painting at State 32 and County KK is expected to be completed this week.

I-43 remains open to traffic with single lane closures in both directions. State 32 remains open to two-way traffic during bridge painting operations. County KK is closed to traffic during bridge painting operations. During closure, County KK will not be detoured.

Asphalt paving will continue this week on State 57 between County O and Clearview Road. Center line rumble strips and lane painting will be placed between County O and State 32. Asphalt pavement removal and replacement with concrete pavement will continue at several locations throughout the project.

State 57 will remain open to through traffic. Between County K and County O, single lane closures will occur in areas of work. Between County O and State 32, work will be completed using flagging operations.
