Quilt with a heart

The Kettle Country Quilters recently donated a Mother and Child theme quilt (above) to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital. The donation followed a donation of baby quilts to the NICU last fall, when staff (below) indicated it would be nice to use one of the quilts as a wall hanging. The guild volunteered to make a quilt to use as a wall hanging and immediately started to work on it as a group project. The quilt was designed to utilize the talents and diverse quilting interests of members. The background is composed of 72 four-inch heart blocks constructed using the paper piecing method. The three red hearts represent the mother, father and baby. The small squares were first pieced together and then hand-appliqued onto the background, as are the mother and baby. The machine-embroidered label includes 18 beads to represent the 18 guild members. The project took six months to complete as it was passed from one member to another.
