Flames’ bats doused again by Port

PORT WASHINGTON – The Plymouth Flames’ recent hitting struggles continued here Sunday afternoon in a 7-4 loss against host Port Washington.

Plymouth managed only four hits as it dropped out of first place in the Northern Division of the Land O’ Lakes Baseball League. The Flames are 4-2 in the division (8-5 overall), one-half game behind front-running Cedarburg (4- 1) and tied for third with Grafton.

The Flames have scored only seven runs in the last three league games combined.

Port Washington improved to 2-4 in league play. Gavin Locke was the winning pitcher – allowing three runs (all unearned) on only two hits with six walks and eight strikeouts in eight innings.

Nick Wilson was the starting and losing hurler for the Flames. Wilson threw seven innings and gave up seven runs (four earned) on six hits with two walks, two hit batters and one strikeout.

The Flames took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Dave Stecker and Jake Klemme drew back-toback walks to start the game and later scored on a balk and infield error, respectively.

The Lakers grabbed the lead for good at 4-2 with four runs in the second. Port Washington collected four hits in the frame, keyed by Andy Wood’s two-run single. A Plymouth error led to a run.

Plymouth cut the deficit to 4-3 on Michael DuCharme’s single which drove in Chris Bennin who had singled with two outs and advanced to second base on an error. The Flames were unable to come any closer the rest of the game.

The Flames tallied their other run in the ninth when Ryan Wachter’s groundout brought home Wilson who had led off with a base hit.

Plymouth’s other hit was a double by Jake Klemme in the ninth. The Flames stranded nine baserunners. Stecker led the Flames in stolen bases with three.

Josh Stanisch sparked the Lakers’ attack with three hits. Stanisch, who had a two-run single in the eighth which upped the Lakers’ lead to 7-3, and Wood had a teamhigh two RBIs each.

“I don’t think we were aggressive enough at the plate. We got behind in the count a lot,” said Flame player-manager Rick Meyer.

“Nick had kind of a rough start but settled down and kept us in the game.”
