Panthers cruise to EWC victory over Huskies

NEW HOLSTEIN – A balanced attack and strong pitching sparked the Plymouth Panthers to a 12-2 trouncing of New Holstein here Thursday evening in Eastern Wisconsin Conference baseball action.

The Panthers raised their firstplace Eastern Wisconsin Conference record to 13-0 (16-2 overall) and made it 16 straight wins. The Huskies fell to 3-6 in the EWC (3-8 overall).

PHS banged out a season-high 15 hits and had an impressive 10 batters with hits. Leading the way was Clay Henning with three, followed by Zac Cain, Eric Leinen and Ryan Schieble with two each.

Cain had a team-high two RBIs. Eight Panthers were in the RBI column. Henning, Cain, Luke Held and Leinen led in runs with two apiece.

Schieble and Henning combined on a five-hitter with Schieble, the starting pitcher, earning the win. Schieble allowed two earned runs on four hits with five walks strikeouts each in five innings.

Henning pitched the final two frames and gave up one hit and one walk while fanning two.

The Panthers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after only 1½ innings, highlighted by a six-run explosion in the top of the second. In the second, PHS pounded out five hits and were aided by two New Holstein errors. The key hits were RBI singles by Henning, Cain and Tyler Willeford.

“Overall, we had a pretty wellplayed game,” said Panther head coach Butch Cain.

“We attacked on the bases and at the plate, and had good pitching and defense.

“Ryan stayed around the corners and mixed his pitches well. He had a good curveball, fastball and changeup. Clay came in and did a nice job,” said coach Cain.

Brady Schmitz led the Huskies in hits with two.

Dominic Probst was the starting and losing hurler. Probst surrendered nine runs (seven earned) on 11 hits with four walks and no strikeouts in four innings.
