The Flames won, 14-1. — Review photo by Greg Ceilley WEST BEND – Right fielder Joel Fabian made a an outstanding catch in the bottom of the ninth inning to preserve the Plymouth Flames’ 4-3 win over the West Bend Benders here Sunday afternoon.

The win snapped the Flames’ three-game losing streak in Land O’ Lakes Baseball League Northern Division play. Plymouth improved to 5-3 in the division (10-6 overall). The Benders fell to 2-5 in the league.

The Benders scored a run in the ninth on Davis Yach’s single which pulled them to within 4-3. With runners at first and second and two outs, Mike Backhaus hit a sinking liner which Fabian snared for the final out. Fabian’s catch saved one run and possibly two.

“That was a big grab by Joel,” said Rick Meyer, the Flames’ player-manager.

“It was a nice win, and a wellplayed game by both teams. It was good to get back on track in the league. The guys played well.”

Matt Schroeder pitched 8-2/3 strong innings and Dave Stecker recorded the final out to earn a save. Schroeder, who mixed his pitches well, scattered 11 hits and allowed three earned runs and three walks while striking out six.

“Matt threw well and moved the ball around,” Meyer observed. Our defense played well behind him.”

Both teams played error-free defense.

The Flames rallied for three runs in the eighth to go ahead 4-2. Pinch hitter David Albrecht led off with a single and advanced to second on Stecker’s sacrifice bunt. Ryan Wachter followed with a single which put runners at first and third.

Schroeder batted next and drove in Albrecht with a single, tying the game at 2-2. Dusty Medved followed with a double which knocked in Wachter and Schroeder.

Plymouth took a 1-0 lead in the second on Jake Klemme’s two-out home run.

The Benders grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth on Justin Wiedmeyer’s RBI single.

Schroeder led the Flames in hits with two. Josh Ernisse, the No. 9 batter, paced West Bend’s attack with three hits.

Tyler Adams pitched a complete game and took the loss. Adams surrendered four earned runs on seven hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
