Five Panthers on All-EWC first team

¦ Plymouth’s Thompson, Holdridge repeat on first team
by Greg Ceilley of The Review staff

Senior second baseman Sara Thompson and junior third baseman Mikaela Holdridge of Plymouth were voted to the All-Eastern Wisconsin Conference softball first team for the second straight season by the league coaches.

Thompson was named to an outfield position last year. She began this past season in right field but was moved to second base because of an injury to a teammate.

The Panthers have three other first-team picks in junior pitcher Rachel Romps, junior catcher Sara Romps (Rachel’s twin sister) and senior center fielder Marissa Grapentine. Also earning All-EWC honors for PHS is senior first baseman Joa Cain who made the second team.

The Romps sisters and Grapentine were second-team players a year ago. PHS has a league-high five first-team selections.

Rachel Romps finished 12-2 in the EWC with an outstanding 1.98 ERA and a league-high 117 strikeouts in only 92 innings. The left-hander led the conference in shutouts with six and wins.

“Rachel had an outstanding season. She continues to im- prove each season,” said Panther head coach Gale Grahn.

Thompson hit a scorch- ing .409 and had 16 RBIs in EWC play.

“Sara Thompson moved to second after Sophia Kiela’s injury and did an excellent job. Sara really stepped up big on numerous occasions this season,” Grahn said.

Kiela senior, was the Panthers’ starting shortstop until a knee injury early in the season sidelined her for the final 15 games which forced PHS to shuffle its infield.

Holdridge led PHS in EWC batting with a sizzling .412 average, had a .588 slugging percentage and totaled 16 RBIs.

“Mikaela had another excellent season,” Grahn noted.

Grapentine had an outstanding .390 batting average and led the league in stolen bases with 10. She scored 15 runs and made several fine plays on defense.

“Marissa went from a bunt threat [last year] to a solid hitter in the No. 2 spot. She had excellent range in center field,” the coach pointed out.

Sara Romps hit .243 and had 11 RBIs in league play, and played strong defense.

“Sara Romps had an excellent defensive year. She had no passed balls and threw out three base stealers in six tries [in league action],” Grahn said.

Cain hit an excellent .375 and had six extra-base hits.

“Joa had a strong offensive season in the EWC,” Grahn said.

Senior shortstop Kenzie Win- ning of Waupun, a first-team pick, was voted the EWC’s Player of the Year. Waupun’s Tom Hagstrom was named the league’s Coach of the Year for the second straight season after he guided the Warriors to their second consecutive EWC title. Hagstrom shared the honor with Grahn in 2012.

Senior Jenny Reicher of Kewaskm, a first-team utility player, was selected to the top unit for the third straight season. She was a first-team pitcher the previous two years.

The other first-team repeaters are Winning and Waupun junior infielder Kelsey Thompson. Sophomore catcher Melanie Juech of Kewaskum is the only unanimous first-team choice.

Reicher was the EWC batting champion with an impressive .523 average, followed by Campbellsport’s Brianna Gruenwald at .516.

Gruenwald led the league in RBIs with 20. Winning scored a conference-high 22 runs.

Junior pitcher Tiffany Killam was the ERA leader with an outstanding 1.35.
